15th week of pregnancy (15 weeks pregnant)
In the 15th week of pregnancy (in the fourth month), you are entering more deeply into the second trimester and can continue to enjoy what may be the most pleasant phase of pregnancy.
Your baby is making impressive progress in the 15th week of pregnancy, and your body is also continuing to change to make room for the growing miracle. By now, your pregnancy is really starting to show.
Have you noticed that you've become a bit more forgetful? Don't worry, that's perfectly normal.
Now is a good time to fully enjoy your pregnancy and prepare for the months ahead.
Week 15 of pregnancy at a glance
Your baby:
- At 15 weeks pregnant, your baby is about 10–11 cm long and weighs around 50 grams – comparable to an apple.
- The skin is still thin and translucent, and blood vessels shine through.
- Eyes and ears are moving closer to their final position, and the face is becoming increasingly expressive.
- The hair, eyebrows and body hair continue to develop, while the larynx and vocal cords grow.
Your body:
- Your belly is becoming more visible as your uterus continues to grow and your muscles stretch.
- You may notice a slight weight gain in the 15th week of pregnancy – this is completely normal.
- Your skin may appear rosier or react more sensitively due to hormonal changes.
- Some women already feel a slight fluttering in their abdomen during the 15th week of pregnancy, caused by the baby’s movements.
Interesting facts about foetus and mum:
- The placenta is working at full capacity to supply your baby with everything it needs.
- In the 15th week of pregnancy, your baby develops its first taste buds and can drink amniotic fluid.
- Pay attention to a balanced diet with enough iron to promote your health and that of your child.
- Your circulatory system is working more intensively, which is why it is important to drink enough water to keep your circulation stable.
Development of the baby in the 15th week of pregnancy:
Your baby now measures about 10–11 cm and is the size of an apple. On the outside, it is looking more and more like a tiny human. Your baby regularly moves its arms and legs, and with a bit of luck, the gender can be identified on the ultrasound in the 15th week of pregnancy.
You cannot see it on the ultrasound, but your baby’s body is covered in fine, soft hair during this week of pregnancy – known as lanugo. For example, it is responsible for ensuring that the vernix caseosa sticks to your little miracle’s body. This is important so that the skin does not become too soft and is protected from the amniotic fluid. The tiny hairs and the vernix caseosa have another important function: they dampen sound, pressure, and vibrations. In the final weeks of your pregnancy, the hair on your baby’s body will slowly disappear.
Your body in week 15 of pregnancy:
You’ve probably already heard about the so-called pregnancy glow. Many expectant mums, during the stage of pregnancy you are in right now, are often complimented on how wonderful they look. This could be due to the first signs of water retention in your face. These smooth out fine lines and make you look fresher. As always, there’s no need to worry if things are different for you. Every pregnancy is unique.
Perhaps you have also noticed that you forget things more often than before your pregnancy. This is due to hormones. They temporarily reduce your brain’s performance. That is why people talk about “pregnancy brain”. Experts suspect that during pregnancy, the brain is already fully focused on the mother-child relationship.

Your breasts continue to prepare for breastfeeding during this week of pregnancy. This too is a hormonal process and can cause uncomfortable tightness. Even a light touch can be very unpleasant. If possible, try not to sleep on your stomach anymore. A gentle massage with oil or warm compresses can provide relief. Also, make sure that your bra is not too tight and does not constrict your breasts.
Conscious nutrition during pregnancy:
You also need particularly high amounts of nutrients in week 15 of pregnancy. Incorporate iron-rich foods such as spinach, oats, or pulses to prevent iron deficiency. Vitamin C, for example from fresh oranges or kiwis, also helps to improve iron absorption. Continue to avoid unpasteurised dairy products and make sure you have a good balance of proteins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats.
Movement and relaxation:
Light sports such as swimming or pregnancy yoga strengthen your muscles and help to prevent pregnancy complaints such as back pain.
Also schedule regular time for relaxation, such as a warm bath or a gentle massage, to reduce stress and deepen your bond with your baby.
Pampering the baby bump:
The skin on your abdomen is put under a lot of strain due to growth in week 15 of pregnancy. Pamper it with a moisturising lotion or oil to prevent feelings of tightness. Massages stimulate blood circulation and can help to minimise stretch marks.
Adjust clothing:
When your favourite trousers start to feel tight, it's time for maternity wear. Invest in comfortable basics such as trousers with an elasticated waistband and loose tops that provide room for your growing bump.
Don’t forget to take precautions:
Your doctor or midwife will support you through this phase. At your next appointment, discuss topics such as weight gain, your baby bump, or any possible discomforts. Regular ultrasound scans are particularly exciting now, as you can closely follow your baby's development.
Frequently Asked Questions about Week 15 of Pregnancy
Can my baby already hear anything?
Yes, the unborn child perceives its first sounds in the 15th week of pregnancy. Through the amniotic sac, muffled stimuli such as your voice or your heartbeat reach it. These sounds provide your baby with a basis for its later day-night rhythm. The nervous system continues to develop in order to respond to such stimuli.
When can the sex of my baby be determined?
In the 15th week of pregnancy, an experienced doctor can determine the baby's sex during an ultrasound, depending on the baby's position. The unborn child is now growing to a size of around 10–11 cm, and the arms and legs are clearly visible. If there is any uncertainty, a later test can provide clarity.
Why am I experiencing increased symptoms such as fatigue?
The increased blood volume and the pregnancy hormone progesterone are reasons for your tiredness in week 15 of pregnancy. Your body is working hard to provide for your baby. Make sure you get enough rest and sleep in order to recharge your energy.
What is happening to my baby’s nervous system?
Your baby's brain continues to develop, and it is forming new reflexes. It is already practising grasping movements with its hands and feet. The umbilical cord supplies everything it needs for its growth and life.
Why is my tummy getting bigger?
Your tummy is growing in week 15 of pregnancy because your uterus needs to make more space for the baby. Organs such as your baby's heart, lungs, and liver are increasing in size. It’s a wonderful glimpse into the world of your little happiness, which continues to grow.
