12th week of pregnancy (12 weeks pregnant)
Congratulations, you are almost at the end of the first trimester. A lot is happening in the 12th week of pregnancy – both with your baby and with you.
This week marks the transition to a more stable phase of pregnancy. By the time you've had your check-up and know that everything is fine, you'll probably want to share the news. Are you considering having a first trimester screening? It's best to discuss this with your doctor.
Your baby continues to grow rapidly and most organs are already developed. Things are also getting easier for you in the 12th week of pregnancy, as many women report that symptoms such as nausea are slowly subsiding.

- At the 12th week of pregnancy, your baby is about 5 cm long and weighs around 14 grams – about as heavy as a raspberry.
- The fingers and toes are fully formed by the 12th week of pregnancy and begin to move.
- The face is becoming increasingly human, eyes and ears are in position.
- Organs such as the liver and kidneys are already functioning and the nervous system continues to develop.
Your body:
- At 12 weeks pregnant, your uterus is the size of a grapefruit and is starting to move from the pelvis into the abdominal cavity.
- The risk of miscarriage decreases significantly.
- You may already be able to notice small changes in your belly at 12 weeks pregnant.
- Your hormones are slowly regulating themselves, which often leads to an improvement in your mood.
Interesting facts about foetus and mum:
- Your baby is starting to drink amniotic fluid and to "practise" in it.
- A balanced diet with plenty of folic acid, iron and calcium remains essential in the 12th week of pregnancy.
- Drink enough water and exercise moderately to support your circulation.
Development of the baby in the 12th week of pregnancy:
At 12 weeks pregnant, your baby is a good 5 cm long and has reached the size of a plum. With a bit of luck, you might already be able to spot your little one's button nose on the ultrasound image.
Your baby is continuing to develop into a little person. It is even starting to bring its hand up to its face and can suck its thumb, as the sucking reflex is forming. Fingernails and toenails are also beginning to grow gradually. The stomach is able to absorb substances.
To practise its breathing and later feeding, your baby now swallows a little amniotic fluid from time to time. At this stage of pregnancy, however, it usually spits it out again.
In addition, your little one is constantly busy doing somersaults in the 12th week of pregnancy. There’s still plenty of space, and they’re making the most of it. But please don’t be surprised if you don’t feel any of this yet. It may still be a few weeks before you do.
Your body in the 12th week of pregnancy:
Have you been dealing with nausea in recent weeks? With a bit of luck, the nausea will noticeably improve this week. This is because many women have become accustomed to the pregnancy hormone HCG. Please don’t worry if your nausea continues beyond the first trimester. Every pregnancy is different.
What you can rely on now, however, is that the risk of miscarriage decreases at the end of the 12th week of pregnancy.

Are you currently feeling particularly tired? That can be quite normal, but for many pregnant women, it is linked to an iron deficiency. This is regularly checked by your gynaecologist. Normally, the iron requirement for adult women is 15 milligrams per day. However, for pregnant women, 30 milligrams per day is recommended.
Many foods that are very rich in iron, such as black pudding, are off-limits for you during pregnancy. You can get an extra portion of iron from, for example, pulses like lentils and beans, green leafy vegetables such as lamb’s lettuce and spinach, or herbs like parsley or cress. However, many pregnant women are prescribed iron as a dietary supplement.
Don’t forget your prenatal check-ups:
The 12th week of pregnancy is a good time to schedule another check-up with your gynaecologist. The nuchal translucency scan, in particular, can be carried out upon request to check your baby's health. Talk to your doctor about the next steps and possible protective measures to optimally support yourself and your child.
Healthy nutrition for mother and child:
Make sure to get enough vitamin C and other nutrients that are important for building your child’s body structures. Avoid raw milk products, ready-made salads, and raw meat to minimise the risk of infection. You are doing a lot of work right now – support yourself with fresh, nutrient-rich foods.
Moderate exercise and relaxation:
Light activities such as pregnancy yoga or walks promote your blood circulation and strengthen your muscles. This can help to alleviate pregnancy complaints such as back pain or stomach pressure. At the same time, relaxation techniques like meditation or breathing exercises help to reduce stress and deepen your connection with your baby.
Planning and preparation:
Now that the critical phase is over, you will surely start thinking about your first purchases. Whether it’s a pram or clothing – planning brings joy and gives you the feeling of having everything under control. Discuss your wishes with your partner or your family and look forward to the little miracle together.
Take care of yourself:
Your body changes every day. Take time for yourself – whether it’s a relaxing bath, a gentle massage, or reading a good book. Self-care is important to maintain your energy and to enjoy the joy of your pregnancy.
Frequently Asked Questions about Week 12 of Pregnancy
Is it normal for the nausea to suddenly disappear?
Yes, the disappearance of nausea is typical, as you are adjusting to the hormonal changes. Many pregnant women experience a significant relief from symptoms around the end of the third month of pregnancy. The placenta now takes over the nourishment of the baby, and the yolk sac becomes less important. Appetite and energy return – a phase full of new joy for the world that you share with your baby.
From when is the bump visible?
The belly usually begins to visibly grow around the third month of pregnancy. Your baby is now about 5 cm long and the diameter of its head is increasing. The mother's muscles and body structures loosen to make room for the baby. The development of the placenta is complete and provides protection. Every pregnancy is different, so if you have any concerns, speak to your gynaecologist.
What should I pay attention to in my diet?
Avoid raw milk products, ready-made salads, and raw meat/fish – protective measures that benefit both your child and your stomach. Your body now especially needs vitamin C, iron, folic acid, and proteins for the work of building your baby’s important structures. Fresh fruit and vegetables are a good choice to provide your baby with the best possible care.
How can I relieve pregnancy discomforts?
Light exercises strengthen the muscles and promote blood circulation, which can alleviate complaints such as stomach pressure. Moving your hands and feet supports circulation. Relaxing in a warm, but not hot, bath helps to loosen the body. Your employer should pay attention to physical strain as part of the protective measures.
Is the risk of miscarriage still high at 12 weeks pregnant?
With the end of the third month of pregnancy, the risk of miscarriage drops significantly. The placenta is fully developed and takes over nourishment. Your baby is about 5 cm long, the head continues to form, and even the little button nose is visible. With each check-up and ultrasound, you gain reassurance and can share the joy of your baby's development with friends and family.
