Babies while out for a walk: The right clothing for every temperature and how to recognise overheating or chilling

Choosing the right clothing for your little one when going for a walk is important in order to keep your baby to protect against overheating or undercooling. In this guide, you will learn which clothing is suitable for different temperatures, how a footmuff can help, and how to tell if your baby is too warm or too cold.

Clothing for different temperatures

Mild temperatures (15-20°C)

Choose lightweight cotton clothing with long sleeves and legs to protect the baby from sun and wind. A thin hat provides extra protection for the head. Don’t forget to put on light socks or shoes to keep the feet warm.

Cool temperatures (10-15°C)

Long-sleeved cotton clothing combined with a thin jacket or a jumper is perfect for cooler temperatures. A hat is important to keep your head warm. Remember to put on socks and shoes to protect your feet from the cold.

Cold temperatures (below 10°C)

Layer the baby with long-sleeved clothing, a jumper, and a warming jacket. A hat that covers the ears and head is essential. Don’t forget to put on gloves or mittens to keep the hands warm. Also choose warm socks and shoes to protect the feet from the cold.

Footmuff for extra warmth

A footmuff is a great addition to the pushchair to keep your baby warm. Choose a footmuff made from insulating material that protects against cold and wind. Make sure the footmuff fits well in the pushchair and allows your baby enough freedom of movement. It should also be easy to open, so your baby can cool down if they get too warm. Our Lunar footmuff is the ideal choice for this.

Signs of overheating

  • Watch out for red and warm skin on the baby.
  • Sweating can be a sign of overheating.
  • Restlessness or irritability may indicate that the baby is too warm.
  • Rapid breathing and an increased body temperature can also be signs of overheating.

Signs of hypothermia

  • Pale or cold skin are signs of hypothermia.
  • If the baby is shivering, it might be too cold.
  • Tiredness or drowsiness can be signs of hypothermia.
  • Slow breathing and a low body temperature can also be signs of hypothermia.

Tips for checking your baby's temperature:

  • Feel the baby’s skin on the back of the neck to check the temperature. If the neck is warm and damp, the baby is too hot. If the neck is cool, the baby is too cold.
  • Pay attention to the baby's behaviour. If it is restless or tearful, it might be too warm or too cold.
  • Use a thermometer to measure the baby's body temperature.
