Why do so many women experience back pain during pregnancy?

During pregnancy your centre of gravity shifts. The bigger your little happiness grows, the further your belly expands forwards. Quite automatically, we then lean backwards to support the weight of the belly. This poor posture leads to back pain.

As your pregnancy progresses, you will increasingly to carry more weight. As a result, you find it harder to move and your muscles, joints and bones have significantly more to bear than usual. Also, the leads to back pain during pregnancy.

Incidentally, the hormonal changes also loosen your tendons and ligaments in the pelvic floor area. This is because your whole body is programmed so that the child is guided towards the birth canal. However, this leads to a lack of stability in the pelvic and lower back area, which in turn can cause pain.

Back pain during the course of pregnancy

Some pregnant women already struggle with back pain during the first trimester, even though their bump isn’t actually that big yet. The Hormonal changes are already causing the tendons and ligaments in the pelvic floor area to loosen.. This can also lead to back pain as early as the first trimester.

The weight of your belly then causes your back pain to intensify or, at the latest, to appear during the course of the second trimester. The weight you’re carrying around with you now is putting quite a bit of pressure on the ligaments in your pelvic area. As a result, most pregnant women experience back pain in the second trimester. In the third trimester, additional factors then contribute to a painful back. Your Little Glück is now sliding its head deeper and deeper into the pelvis.. In this process, the baby’s head presses on the pelvic nerves. This causes back pain. If more severe back pain occurs towards the end of the third trimester, Could that also be contractions?, which radiate into the back.

What can you do about back pain during pregnancy?

Our my junior physiotherapist Jacky advises pregnant women with back pain to provide relief as often as possible. Your midwife or a physiotherapist can demonstrate targeted exercises to activate the lumbar spine, so that you regain more stability.

Try to work on your posture. Due to the heavy weight of the belly, many women tend to stand with an arched back. Try to keep your stomach over your centre of gravity and avoid sticking it out too far in front. That can provide relief.

Heat is one of the best remedies for tension and pain. in the back area. A hot water bottle or a nice warm bath can be very relieving for your back. A soothing bath, a hot water bottle or a heat pad can provide relief from pain. However, our my junior physiotherapist Jacky advises to be careful when using electric heat to treat the pain. If the electric heat is applied to the lumbar or lower thoracic spine area, it can even worsen the pain.

Treat yourself with severe pain, plenty of rest is also important. Try to incorporate small breaks into your daily routine. Under no circumstances should you compare yourself to other pregnant women. Every pregnancy is different, and some experience more severe pain while others hardly have any pain at all. Try to focus on yourself and the little happiness growing beneath your heart.. As soon as you hold your baby in your arms, back pain and other unpleasant side effects of pregnancy will be forgotten.
