Infant car seat vs. carrycot.

Why the lying surface is so important

Infant car seats are practical and provide safety in the car. Many parents now use them for longer periods in everyday life as well, since there are combination solutions with prams.


Problem:

In the car seat, the baby lies in a semi-upright, curved position. This should not be used for more than about 1 hour at a time (AAP & DGKJ). Prolonged sitting can impair breathing, strain the spine, and severely restrict freedom of movement.

The carrycot, on the other hand, is the most important place for healthy baby sleep in the pram:
- Flat, straight lying surface → supports breathing, the spine and hip development.
- Plenty of space → the baby can move, stretch and turn freely.
- Promotes a healthy sleep rhythm → because babies still sleep a lot in the first few months (up to 16–18 hours a day).

Previous challenge:

Carrycots were often perceived as too big, heavy and impractical. Modern developments in the pram industry are addressing exactly this: lighter, more compact yet comfortable carrycots that parents can integrate better into everyday life.

The first 3–12 months are crucial.

Increased risk of SIDS and much more.

Lying flat on a straight, firm surface is especially important for babies during the first months of life – particularly for reasons of safety and development:
Reasons

1. Safe sleep & SIDS prevention
- A firm, even surface reduces the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) as the baby cannot sink into soft padding and block their airways.
- Raised or inclined surfaces (e.g. bouncers, car seats, cushions) increase the risk of the head falling forward → possible airway obstruction.

2. Even physical development
- On a flat surface, babies can develop their muscles symmetrically.
- It reduces the risk of skull deformities (plagiocephaly) if the position is changed regularly.

3. Optimal spinal and hip development
- Newborns have spines and hips that are not yet fully developed.
- Flat, firm surfaces support the natural posture better than inclined or soft surfaces.

  1. Organiser of the competition
    The competition is organised by my junior GmbH, Am Parir 25, 52379 Langerwehe, Germany (“organiser”). If you have any questions, you can contact us by email at Hallo@my-junior.com apply.

By participating in the competition, the participant fully accepts these terms and conditions of participation and the privacy policy (see Section 4).

  1. Duration and procedure of the competition
    The competition begins on 3.September 2025 at 3:00 pm (CET) and ends on 15 November 2025 at 12:00 pm (CET).
    Participation takes place by the participant creating a my junior® Family & Friends Club account and activating the my junior® newsletter. The prize will be announced immediately after participation.
