Mum vs Dad
The playground: one place, two worlds.

You: A place full of unspoken thoughts.

You arrive. Push the pram. Look around.

And then it begins.

The woman over there seems so relaxed. How does she do it? Her child is just playing and she’s just sitting there. I never just sit there.

You sit down on the bench. The baby in your arms, the older one already on the slide. You smile at the other mum. She smiles back. Kindly. Or was it just polite? Or did she just look at your thermos flask?

Then the moment comes. The baby is hungry.

Do I breastfeed here? Or use the bottle? If I breastfeed, someone might look at me funny. If I give the bottle, she might think I don’t breastfeed. Why am I thinking that right now? She probably isn’t thinking that. Or is she?

You breastfeed. Or give the bottle. Both are right. But something inside you still briefly calculates whether you should have an explanation ready, even though nobody has asked.

A little while later, your older child falls over. They cry briefly, then get back up.

Should I have been paying closer attention? Did she see that? Was I too laid-back? Am I too laid-back?

You are not too laid-back. You are a mum at a playground. And your mind is working overtime because that’s what it always does. Because you worry. About your child, about yourself, about the fleeting glance of a woman you will never see again and whose opinion really doesn’t matter.

And yet somehow, it does.

He: Present.
Content. Free of thoughts.

At the same time. On the same bench. Maybe even next to you.

He leans back.

He briefly looks up at the sun.

He thinks: Bloody brilliant weather.

Then he checks whether the child is still alive.

It is. It wriggles. All good.

He drinks his coffee. He watches a dog go by. Maybe he also thinks: I wonder if we're having pasta tonight?

That's it.

No social comparison. No silent judgement. No mental arithmetic about whether sitting on the bench says anything about his qualities as a father.

He is simply there. In the fullest, most relaxed sense of the word.

You briefly look at him out of the corner of your eye.

How. Does. He. Do. It.

And do you know what?

You’re both doing the same thing. You’re both at this playground, for this child, on this day.

Him with an empty head and a full heart. You with a full head and an equally full heart.

Neither of you is doing it wrong.

But perhaps – just perhaps – your head is allowed to take a short break today too.

By the way, the other mum is thinking exactly the same thing as you right now.

She’s wondering whether you think she’s weird.

Less baggage. In your head and on your car.

We can’t take the carousel of thoughts off your hands – that’s somehow part of it.

But the weight on the pram? We can make that lighter.

With my junior, you’ll find products that make everyday life at the playground a little more relaxed. So you can sit on the bench and, just for a moment, simply think:

Bloody lovely weather.
