You are pregnant and can hardly believe your luck. A little person is growing beneath your heart. You would love nothing more than to tell the whole world straight away. But should you really share the joyful news with everyone around you right away? With whom should you perhaps wait a little longer, and whom should you tell immediately? This decision is incredibly individual. In this guide, we want to provide you with some orientation.
The "12-week rule" – still up to date?
You have probably often heard or read that you should only tell others about your pregnancy after 12 weeks. This is because the likelihood of a miscarriage decreases after 12 weeks. Everyone you tell about the pregnancy, you would also have to tell about the loss, should it occur. But what is actually so bad about that? Is it really necessary to deal with this painful loss on your own? We say, no! Especially your close circle of friends and family may well be an emotional support for you if the worst should happen.
On the other hand, there are certainly also people in your environment, for example at work, with whom you definitely do not want to share your loss, because they might not be good for you.
An individual decision
You alone decide whom you want to tell about your pregnancy and when. Only inform those people at the beginning of your pregnancy whom you would also tell about a loss. Are you more of a reserved person who prefers to deal with losses on your own? Then feel free to wait until you have a good feeling about it. Are you an open type who can cope well with losses when you have lots of people supporting you? Then there’s nothing to stop you from telling people about your pregnancy early on.

When should you inform your employer about your pregnancy?
You are at work not obliged to do so To inform your employer about your pregnancy. You are merely obliged to notify your parental leave two months before it begins to announce. Paragraph 15 of the Maternity Protection Act states that the employer should be informed as soon as you are aware of the pregnancy. So you should, but you don’t have to. However, it does make sense to inform your employer as early as possible. Because then the Maternity Protection Act. This brings you and your little one several advantages, such as Protection against dismissal, protection periods before and after the calculated due date, special Precautions such as breaks at the workplace and the right to doctor’s appointments during working hours. Should you be dismissed before you have informed your employer, you have two weeks to notify them of the pregnancy in order to still benefit from protection against dismissal.
In summary, it is and remains your individual decision when and to whom you tell about your pregnancy. Take your time with the decision. Are you still looking for a creative idea for how you want to tell your loved ones about the pregnancy? Then we have... here Tips for you.
