Congratulations on your summer baby. Your baby is arriving just in time for the hot days, and you’re wondering how best to dress them? In this guide, we’ll tell you what you need to look out for.
Summery temperatures in mum’s tummy
As long as your baby is still in your womb, it enjoys summery temperatures of 37 degrees. Then, at last, it comes into the world and you get to hold it in your arms. Bear in mind what temperatures your baby is used to from your womb. Even at temperatures that feel pleasant to us, your baby could quickly become too cold. It must therefore be urgently protected from hypothermia and kept as warm as possible. Snuggling up close to mum’s skin already helps to keep things pleasantly warm. For some newborns, a little extra help with suitable clothing or blankets may still be needed.
No sun for newborns
Once you have left the hospital, your little treasure will come into contact with the sun for the first time. Especially in summer, UV rays are particularly dangerous. That’s why you should protect your baby from the sun, especially during their first weeks of life. Many doctors even advise keeping babies out of the sun completely during their first year. So it’s best to stay in the shade and Protect your baby by covering their skin.
What should I dress my newborn in during the summer?
You’re probably familiar with the rule of thumb “Always one more layer” than you yourself are wearing. However, this does not apply to your newborn in the height of summer. Your baby doesn’t need to wear two layers now, but Arms and legs should be covered, when you are out and about. In their first year of life, babies still have to learn how to regulate their body temperature. Bodily functions such as shivering or goosebumps still need to develop, which is why it is important that you keep your child warm enough even when the outside temperatures are high.

Monitor body temperature
You can easily find out whether your baby is too warm or too cold by checking the back of their neck. If your baby’s neck is warm but not sweaty or damp, everything is as it should be. If the neck is warm and damp, your baby is too warm.
