The development of your baby is incredibly fascinating. This also applies to the development of their sense of hearing. This begins to form in the womb, allowing your baby to recognise your voice shortly after birth. In this guide, we explain what your little one can hear in the womb and how their hearing develops during the first year.
What your baby hears in the womb
20th to 24th week
Already now, an auditory stimulus triggers motor reactions in your baby. Loud noises cause the heart rate to increase. and the baby moves more. So you could say that your baby gets startled when it hears a loud noise. Your voice and gentle music, on the other hand, ensure that the heart rate decreases. and your happiness calms down again or simply listens with interest.
28th week
Your baby is now able to recognise your voice. So it is absolutely not silly to start talking to your baby already. Even while it is still in your womb, it can definitely hear you and distinguish your voice from others. Your voice even has a calming effect. Sounds and voices from outside are not the only things your little one can hear now. Your heartbeat, stomach growling, blood flowing, or digestive noises are also perceived by your baby. If you add the sounds from outside to this, it amounts to a constant noise level of up to 80 decibels. That is about as loud as a normal speaking voice.
Dear Mum or Dad?
As high-pitched sounds are perceived more towards the entrance of the ear, your baby also perceives these more readily in the womb than low-pitched sounds. This, in turn, means that Your luck You tend to hear Mum’s usually higher voice more easily than Dad’s usually deeper voice..
Music in the womb
You’ve probably heard before that Psychologists advise singing to the baby in the womb or placing a music box on the stomach. That actually makes sense, because your baby will recognise the melody once it is in the world. This can have a calming effect.
What your baby hears after birth
Your baby can hear normally as soon as it is born. During the first few days, everything still sounds a little muffled for your baby’s happiness. This is because there is still some amniotic fluid in the middle ear. But that disappears after a few days.
Just a few hours after the birth of your little bundle of joy, it is able to distinguish the parents' voices from other voices. It is also startled by very loud noises.
In his 2nd month of life is your baby able to perceive noises or voices and to to move the head in the direction of the sound source.
1 year
From around the fourth month, your little one will then also start to look for the source of the sound with their eyes. Just a month later, your baby will be able to reach for objects that make interesting noises. Rattles are particularly fascinating at this stage.
At around six months old, your baby can respond to their name. If you call it, it will most likely look in your direction and know that you meant it. Otherwise, your baby does not yet know exactly what your words mean, but from the sound and tone of your voice, it can tell roughly what you mean. So it can definitely tell if you are joking around, especially if you change your voice accordingly.
At around one year old, your baby can reliably and directly locate sound stimuli. It understands something. z.B. the word no and perhaps it is now beginning to speak its first words.

Your baby learns an incredible amount in the first year of life. So please don’t worry if your little one develops a bit later than described in this guide. Every baby develops at their own pace.
