New Year's Eve with a Baby: Tips for Ringing in the New Year

Another year has flown by and New Year’s Eve is just around the corner. Is this your first New Year’s with a baby? We can already tell you this much: it will be different, but still wonderful. Here are a few tips on how you can start the new year safely and comfortably with your baby.

1. Protect your baby's hearing

Fireworks and firecrackers can be very loud and may damage your baby's sensitive hearing. Therefore, stay away from loud fireworks. and find yourself a quiet place to watch the spectacle from a distance. If you do happen to be outside, you can put ear defenders or headphones on your baby to protect their hearing.

2. Pay attention to safety

New Year’s Eve can be associated with many dangers, such as stray fireworks or loud banging noises. Always keep your baby at a safe distance from fireworks and firecrackers. If you are celebrating at home, make sure that all fireworks are out of your baby's reach.

3. Avoid smoke and the smell of smoke

Fireworks often produce smoke that is harmful to babies. Therefore, avoid places where there is a lot of smoke, and also keep your baby away from cigarette smoke. If you are celebrating at home, make sure that the smoke does not enter the room where your little one is.

4. Take your baby's sleep into account

Are you celebrating at home? Then Try to maintain your baby's normal sleep routine. With a bit of luck, it will sleep through the fireworks at midnight. If it is woken by the loud noises, stay close to your little one. Don’t forget to switch on the baby monitor so you can be there quickly if needed. If you are celebrating with friends or family, take the pram, a portable cradle or a travel cot with you so that your little one can sleep safely even when you are out and about.

5. Just no guilty conscience

You don’t feel comfortable taking your baby to a big celebration? You want to spend New Year’s Eve quietly at home, just the two of you? Trust your instincts. Mums and dads know best what is good for their baby. Therefore, don’t feel guilty about cancelling a party. And if, as parents, you want to spend the evening without your baby and leave the baby with the grandparents, don’t let anyone make you feel guilty about that either.
