Safe Baby Sleep: 7 Tips for Creating a Safe and Healthy Sleep Environment

The topic of baby sleep is a major concern for many parents. Expectant parents want to make sure that their baby has a safe and restful sleep. In this guide, we give you 7 tips on how you can how you can create a healthy sleep environment for your little one.

1. The right baby cot

A good mattress is essential for safe baby sleep. Choose a mattress that is firm and flat to minimise the risk of suffocation or overheating. Make sure it fits perfectly in the cot to avoid gaps into which the baby could slip. Avoid mattresses with overly soft surfaces or memory foam, as these can increase the risk of suffocation.

2. Not too much in bed

Only a mattress belongs in the cot. It’s best to choose a sleeping bag for your little one. Blankets, pillows, soft toys and anything else do not belong in the cot. There is a risk of suffocation. For example, your baby might accidentally pull a blanket over their face. There is also a risk of overheating.

3. The right room temperature:

Keep your baby's bedroom at a comfortable temperature between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius. Avoid overheating by not dressing your baby too warmly or using too many blankets. A lightweight sleeping bag can be a good alternative. Make sure your baby is not too cold by dressing them appropriately.

4. Avoid smoking:

Smoking near your baby increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Never smoke near the cot or in the same room. Make sure that anyone else caring for your baby does not smoke either. Smoking in the house can also cause harmful particles to accumulate in the air, which may affect your baby's airways.

5. Sleeping position:

Always place your baby on their back to sleep. This position significantly reduces the risk of SIDS. Avoid placing your baby on their stomach or side, even if they are restless. If your baby sleeps better on their side, you can use a special sleep positioner that ensures their safety.

6. Darkness and quiet:

Create a calm and dark sleeping environment for your baby. Use blackout curtains to keep daylight out and ensure a pleasant background noise, for example with a soft lullaby or a noise machine. Avoid loud noises or bright lights that could disturb your baby’s sleep.

7. Monitoring:

Keep an eye on your baby while they sleep, especially during the first few months. A baby monitor can help keep you informed about your baby's activities, even when you are not in the same room. Make sure that the baby monitor has a good range and provides clear audio and video transmission to ensure that you are always aware of your baby's sleep status. This way, you can react immediately when your baby wakes up and attend to their needs.
