Applying for parental allowance – What you should bear in mind
Parental allowance is a compensatory payment for parents. It depends on your net income and is intended to provide financial support to those who do not work at all or work less after the birth of their childIt is possible to receive parental allowance and work up to 32 hours per week. It is equally possible not to work at all and to receive parental allowance. Parental allowance is regulated in the Federal Parental Allowance and Parental Leave Act (BEEG).
What types of parental allowance are there?
Parental allowance is available in three different variants: Basic parental allowance, Parental Allowance Plus and partnership bonus.
Basic parental allowance
You are entitled to basic parental allowance for two to twelve months if only one parent receives the parental allowance. If your partner also wishes to claim parental allowance, you are both entitled to a total of 14 months of parental allowance between you. You can divide this completely freely among yourselves. You can receive the basic parental allowance together, consecutively, or alternately. For example: the mother takes parental leave for 8 months after the birth and receives parental allowance. Afterwards, the father or partner has the option to take parental leave for 6 months and receive parental allowance. If only one parent takes parental leave, they receive 12 months of parental allowance. Are you a single parent? Then you are entitled to 14 months of parental allowance.
For premature births, the legislator has found a different regulation: If your baby is born at least six weeks early, you are entitled to a longer period. to the benefits, namely up to 18 months.
The amount of the basic parental allowance depends on your net income. and can range between 300 and 1800 euros per month. As a rule, you receive 65 percent of your net income. If you did not work before the birth of your baby, you will receive the minimum rate of 300 euros per month. If your income is particularly low, you can receive up to 100 percent of your net income.
Parental Allowance Plus
You receive Parental Allowance Plus Twice as long as the basic parental allowance. So, for example, if you plan to stay at home for two years after the birth, you will receive half of the basic parental allowance for 24 months. You are simply spreading the parental allowance over a longer period of time. If you want to work part-time after the birth, ElterngeldPlus is particularly worthwhile. This way, you can receive more parental allowance than if you work part-time with the basic parental allowance option.
The parental allowance Plus is between 150 and 900 euros per month.
Partnership bonus
Are you planning to split the care of your baby 50:50 with your partner? Then the partnership bonus is worthwhile. This way, you receive parental allowance Plus for additional months. The prerequisite is that both parents work part-time at the same time.
If you are a single parent and work part-time, that also meets the requirements.
Basic parental allowance, Parental Allowance Plus, and the partnership bonus can be combined with each other. For example, you could receive basic parental allowance during the first four months of your child's life. Your partner could then receive the basic parental allowance in the fifth and sixth month of the child's life. Then, in theory, it is possible for both to receive Parental Allowance Plus. If both then work part-time, they can claim the partnership bonus.
Am I entitled to more money if I already have children?
Through the Sibling bonus Depending on the age of the children, you are entitled to additional benefits. Parental allowance will then be increased by 10%. at least by 75 euros per month for the basic parental allowance or 37.50 euros per month for the Parental Allowance Plus.
You receive the sibling bonus if at least one other child under the age of 3 lives with you. Or else, if two other children live with you who are not yet 6 years old. You are also entitled to additional benefits if you have to care for a child with a disability. The degree of disability must be at least 20 percent in this case. With the sibling bonus, basic parental allowance can amount to at least €375 and at most €1,980, while parental allowance plus can be at least €187.50 and at most €990.
