Travel stroller with a foldable carrycot

Most travel buggies have one problem: they can only be used once your baby is old enough to sit, i.e. from 6 months at the earliest. For families with newborns, a travel buggy was therefore not an option for a long time.

That is now changing. The latest developments in travel buggies come with foldable carrycots that fold down just as compactly as the buggy itself. The result: a single system that is ready for travel from day one and still fits into hand luggage.

We explain what you need to look out for with these models – and why the foldable carrycot is the biggest innovation in the buggy market for years. Leading the way in this development: the my junior LIYO

What is a foldable carrycot?

A foldable carrycot is a carrycot that can be folded together with the buggy frame – without having to be removed. That sounds like a minor detail. In practice, it is a design revolution.

The difference compared with a classic carrycot

Classic carrycots are rigid shells that have to be transported separately from the frame. You remove the carrycot, put it down somewhere, fold the frame and carry both separately. In everyday life at home, this is manageable – at the airport, in a taxi or on a train, it is a logistical challenge.

A foldable carrycot solves this problem by becoming an integral part of the folding mechanism: the entire system – frame and carrycot – folds together in one movement. The result is a compact package that can be transported, stored and lifted into overhead bins.

Flat recline position vs. a genuine carrycot – an important difference

Not every buggy described as ‘suitable from birth’ has a genuine carrycot. Some only offer a backrest that reclines far backwards. That is not the same thing:

•Flat backrest (180° seat): The backrest is positioned completely flat. It looks like a lying surface, but is still slightly angled and has no fixed carrycot sides.

•Genuine carrycot: A completely flat, horizontal lying surface with fixed sides. Recommended by paediatricians for the first few months of life because it provides optimum support for the spine and airways.

Both my junior models with a foldable carrycot – the LIYO and the PICO 3 with carrycot – offer genuine carrycots with a completely flat lying surface, not a simulated seat.

Why this is a gamechanger

The dilemma parents with newborns have faced until now

Until now, parents who wanted to travel during their baby’s first six months faced a clear either-or decision:

1.Take the heavy travel system with you – check it in at the gate, wait around, risk damage during transport and have no hand luggage.

2.Take a lightweight travel pushchair – but without a carrycot, which paediatricians do not recommend for newborns.

3.Give up on the trip – which is not a genuine option for many families.

All three options have a real drawback. The foldable carrycot is the first solution to resolve this dilemma – without compromising on safety, comfort or mobility.

What specifically changes

•No more need to gate-check it: The compact system fits in your hand luggage – the pushchair and carrycot do not end up separated in the hold.

•No switching systems: You do not need to buy a separate travel system in addition to your pushchair – one product accompanies you from birth to around 4 years.

•No dismantling while you’re out and about: Leave the carrycot in place, use one simple movement and the system folds down. No screws, no searching for adapters.

•Full flexibility from day one: City trips, flights, train journeys – from the very first day of life, without luggage restrictions getting in the way.

💡 The underrated everyday benefit

The foldable carrycot is not just useful when travelling. In everyday life too – when getting into the car, visiting friends without a lift or storing it in a small boot – being able to fold it with the carrycot in place makes all the difference. Once you have used a system with a foldable carrycot, you will not want to go back.

What to look for in a foldable baby bath

Not every ‘foldable bath’ is the same. These criteria determine whether a system is truly practical for everyday use—or only works on paper.

1. Sleeping surface: Flat is non-negotiable

The sleeping surface of the carrycot must be completely flat – no slight incline, no soft base without firm support. Paediatricians recommend a stable, horizontally flat surface for the first few months of life, which supports the spine evenly and keeps the airways clear.

Check when buying: Does the mattress really lie flat? Is there firm base support that does not give way? Is the sleeping width sufficient – at least 28–30 cm for newborns?

2. Folding mechanism: How does folding with the carrycot really work?

There are two different approaches on the market:

•System A – carrycot remains attached and folds with it: The pushchair is folded, and the carrycot folds with the frame. No handling of the carrycot is required. This is the most elegant approach.

•System B – carrycot is folded flat, then detached: The carrycot is pressed flat or moved into a transport position before folding, then carried separately or stored in a bag.

The my junior LIYO with EvoOne™ belongs to System A: The carrycot remains attached to the frame and folds with it – one movement, one compact package. The PICO 3 with carrycot can also be folded down compactly. Always test the mechanism yourself in a my junior store before buying.

3. Folded size with carrycot: The overall dimensions are what count

The crucial measurement is not the folded size of the pushchair without the carrycot – but the folded size of the entire system, including the attached carrycot. Some manufacturers advertise small folded dimensions that only apply to the pushchair without accessories.

The my junior LIYO is IATA-approved – this means that the entire system, including the carrycot, meets the cabin-size requirements of the international air transport association. This is the most reliable confirmation of its true travel size.

4. Sun protection in the carrycot: Often underestimated

In the carrycot, the baby lies flat on their back with their face pointing upwards – UV rays hit them directly. A large, sufficiently covering sun canopy with UV50+ protection is even more important in the carrycot position than in the seat. Check whether the canopy works fully when the carrycot is attached and provides sufficient coverage.

The LIYO has the AllOver SunProtection sun canopy integrated directly – it protects the baby from all sides, not just from the front. The 180° panoramic window also provides ventilation and allows parents to keep an eye on their baby.

5. Hygiene and care: The carrycot must be washable

Babies spit up, sweat and have nappy accidents. The carrycot insert and cover must be machine-washable or at least easy to wipe clean. This is even more important when travelling than at home, as you cannot rely on spare items.

Models compared: what the market offers

The following table provides an honest comparison: a travel stroller with a folding carrycot versus all the relevant alternatives – a traditional convertible pushchair, baby carrier and standard travel stroller without a carrycot.

Conclusion of the comparison

No alternative system solves the fundamental problem as consistently as a travel pushchair with a folding carrycot. The baby carrier is cabin-friendly, but offers neither sun protection, a lie-flat position nor a basket. The classic pushchair has everything – but cannot travel. The standard travel pushchair can travel – but not with newborns.

The my junior LIYO is the only solution that makes every field in the table green. The PICO 3 with carrycot comes a strong second – with the advantage that the carrycot can also be retrofitted as an optional accessory.
