24th week of pregnancy (24 weeks pregnant)

Welcome to the 24th week of pregnancy! You are now in the last month of your second trimester. Your baby is becoming more active, you can feel the movements more intensely – and at the same time, your body is gradually preparing itself for the birth.

In week 24 of pregnancy, a significant milestone is also approaching: from now on, under certain conditions, premature babies are considered potentially viable. Even though your baby should stay in your belly a while longer, it is a comforting thought – and further proof of the miracle growing inside you.

The 24th week of pregnancy at a glance

Your baby at 24 weeks pregnant:

  • Size: approx. 30 cm, weight: about 600–700 g
  • The lungs continue to form alveoli and produce the first small amounts of surfactant – an important substance for later breathing.
  • The skin is still thin, but is better protected by the vernix caseosa.
  • Your baby is actively responding to sounds, light, and movement – their sense of hearing is now very sensitive.
  • The movements become stronger and more coordinated – often noticeable as kicks or rolling.

Your body at 24 weeks pregnant:

  • Your uterus now extends about 4 cm above your navel.
  • Typical complaints may include back pain, calf cramps, heartburn, or fatigue.
  • Your blood volume has increased further – which can lead to circulatory fluctuations.
  • Stretch marks or changes in the skin are also common – good skincare is especially beneficial now.

Development of the baby in the 24th week of pregnancy

In the 24th week of pregnancy, your baby is becoming more and more like a little person. Measuring around 30 cm from crown to heel and weighing about 650 g, it is now the size of a corn on the cob. Although it still appears delicate and thin, it is steadily gaining more fatty tissue – important for later regulating its own body temperature.

Your baby’s brain is continuing to develop rapidly, and the lungs are also maturing. Particularly exciting: the lung alveoli are now beginning to produce surfactant – a substance that prevents the lungs from collapsing after birth.

The sense of hearing is so well developed that your baby can clearly perceive sounds from outside. It recognises your voice, is soothed by familiar tones and even reacts to music. Perhaps it gives a little start when things suddenly get loud?

The sense of balance is also active: many babies are now starting to do little “somersaults” in the womb – a sign that they feel comfortable and have enough space to move around. The movements seem more purposeful and stronger than just a few weeks ago.

Your body in the 24th week of pregnancy

You too are now noticing the effects of your ongoing growth: the uterus now clearly extends above the navel. The baby bump is impossible to miss – and with it come new challenges in everyday life.

Due to the increasing blood volume and the additional weight, you may experience dizziness, shortness of breath or circulatory fluctuations – especially if you move quickly or stand for longer periods. Make sure to take breaks, listen to your body and allow yourself regular rest.

Calf cramps, heartburn, and a slight pulling sensation in the lower abdomen are also typical companions this week. The cause is often the increasing stretching of ligaments and muscles – your body is making room for your baby.

Many women report changes in their skin, a feeling of tightness in their breasts, or occasional leakage of colostrum at 24 weeks pregnant. This is completely normal and shows that your body is actively preparing for breastfeeding.

Tips for the 24th week of pregnancy

  • 🧘‍♀️ Movement against ailments: Light exercise such as swimming, walking or pregnancy yoga strengthens the circulation, relieves back pain and improves your posture.
  • 💧 Drink plenty of fluids in case of circulatory fluctuations: Your blood volume is significantly increased. To avoid dizziness and fatigue, you should drink 1.5–2 litres of water daily – unsweetened tea is also fine.
  • 🥗 Don't forget iron: In the 24th week of pregnancy, your need for iron increases. Choose iron-rich foods such as lentils, spinach or whole grains – ideally combined with vitamin C for better absorption.
  • 🛌 Optimise your sleeping position: Many women are now sleeping worse. Lie on your side (left is ideal), use a nursing pillow, and make sure your environment is calm and dark for better sleep.
  • 🧴 Skincare & Attention: Your skin is under a lot of strain. Oils containing almond, jojoba or shea butter can relieve feelings of tightness and help prevent stretch marks.
  • 📋 Mentally prepare & relieve yourself: Plan small to-dos such as birth preparation, initial purchases or forms for parental allowance. A checklist helps you keep track of everything – without any stress.
