24th Week of Pregnancy (Week 24)
Welcome to the 24th week of pregnancy! You are now in the final month of your second trimester. Your baby is becoming more active, you will feel the movements more intensely – and at the same time, your body is gradually preparing for birth.
During week 24, an important milestone draws nearer: from now on, under certain conditions, premature babies may be considered potentially viable. Even though your baby should stay inside for a while longer, it’s a comforting thought – and further proof of the miracle growing inside you.
The 24th Week of Pregnancy at a Glance
Your baby in week 24:
- Size: approx. 30 cm, Weight: around 600–700 g
- The lungs continue to develop alveoli and start producing small amounts of surfactant – an important substance for later breathing
- The skin is still thin but is now better protected by the vernix caseosa
- Your baby actively responds to sounds, light, and movement – hearing is now very sensitive
- Movements are getting stronger and more coordinated – often noticeable as kicks or rolls
Your body in week 24:
- Your uterus now extends about 4 cm above your belly button
- Typical complaints can include back pain, calf cramps, heartburn, or tiredness
- Your blood volume has increased further – which can lead to circulatory fluctuations
- Stretch marks or changes in the skin are also common – good skincare is especially beneficial now
Baby’s Development in Week 24
In the 24th week of pregnancy, your baby is becoming more and more like a little person. At about 30 cm long (crown to heel) and weighing around 650 g, it is now the size of an ear of corn. Even though it still appears delicate and thin, it’s gradually gaining fat tissue – important for regulating body temperature after birth.
Your baby’s brain is developing rapidly, and the lungs are maturing as well. Particularly exciting: the lung alveoli are now starting to produce surfactant – a substance that prevents the lungs from collapsing after birth.
The sense of hearing is so well developed that your baby can clearly perceive external noises. It recognises your voice, is calmed by familiar sounds, and even responds to music. Perhaps it startles a little if things suddenly get loud?
The sense of balance is also active: many babies now begin doing little “somersaults” in the womb – a sign that your baby feels comfortable and has room to move. The movements are more deliberate and powerful than just a few weeks ago.
Your Body in the 24th Week of Pregnancy
You’ll also notice the effects of your growing baby: the uterus now extends clearly above your belly button. Your bump is impossible to miss – and with it come new everyday challenges.
Due to increased blood volume and extra weight, you may experience dizziness, shortness of breath, or circulatory fluctuations – especially if you move quickly or stand for long periods. Make sure to take breaks, listen to your body, and allow yourself regular rest.
Calf cramps, heartburn, and mild pulling sensations in the lower abdomen are also typical this week. This is often caused by the stretching of ligaments and muscles – your body is making space for your child.
Many women report changes in their skin, breast tenderness, or occasional leakage of colostrum during week 24. This is completely normal and shows that your body is actively preparing for breastfeeding.
Tips for the 24th Week of Pregnancy
- 🧘♀️ Exercise to Relieve Discomfort: Gentle exercise such as swimming, walking or pregnancy yoga strengthens your circulation, eases back pain and improves your posture.
- 💧 Drink plenty if you feel lightheaded: Your blood volume is greatly increased. To avoid dizziness and tiredness, you should drink 1.5–2 litres of water a day – unsweetened tea is also fine.
- 🥗 Don’t forget iron: Your need for iron increases in the 24th week. Choose iron-rich foods such as lentils, spinach or whole grains – ideally combined with vitamin C for better absorption.
- 🛌 Optimise your sleeping position: Many women sleep less well at this stage. Lie on your side (left is ideal), use a nursing pillow, and make sure your room is quiet and dark for better sleep.
- 🧴 Skincare & self-care: Your skin is under strain. Oils containing almond, jojoba or shea butter can relieve tightness and help prevent stretch marks.
- 📋 Prepare mentally & reduce stress: Plan small tasks such as birth preparation, first purchases or paperwork for parental allowance. A checklist helps you keep track – without stress.
